How UGM is affected by the postal strike
Since Friday, November 15th, mail services across the country have been disrupted as Canada Post workers initiated a nation-wide strike. For many non-profits like Union Gospel Mission (UGM), this strike is a critical challenge during one of the most important times of the year: the holiday fundraising season.
Canada Post plays a pivotal role in UGM’s fundraising efforts. In fact, nearly 50% of our donations in October came through the mail. For UGM, a charity that supports people facing homelessness, addiction, and poverty in Metro Vancouver and on Vancouver Island, the fall and winter months are crucial for raising the funds necessary to provide essential services.
November and December’s fundraising results account for nearly half of UGM's annual revenue, meaning any disruption during this season could impact our ability to provide life-saving programs in 2025. With the cold months ahead, the demand for our services is higher than ever, and a delay in donations could jeopardize our ability to support those in need.
What you can do to help
To adapt to the ongoing strike and ensure that our community’s needs are met, UGM is pivoting to alternative methods of fundraising. We encourage donors to use fast, secure options like giving online at UGM.ca or by phone at 1.888.347.HOPE (4673). We are also reaching out through social media and in-person engagements to ensure our supporters can continue to connect with us.
Your contribution will help us provide shelter, food, recovery services, and more to those in need. Every dollar given welcomes people in for a nourishing meal, provides emergency weather supplies for people living outdoors, and allows someone to spend the night in a warm and safe bed at our shelter.
While the strike may cause delays, the reality is that homelessness, addiction, and poverty don’t take a break. These issues impact our communities year-round, especially during the winter months when the cold makes isolation and lack even worse. At UGM, we remain committed to providing unwavering support to those who need it most, no matter the circumstances.
As we hope for a swift and fair resolution to the strike, we are grateful for our community of donors who continue to support us. Together, we can ensure that our services remain available, even during times of disruption.
During this critical fundraising season, you can support UGM by donating online at UGM.ca or by phone at 1.888.347.HOPE (4673). Your support makes all the difference for people in need.
